The Tin-Can Island Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has reported a substantial revenue generation exceeding two hundred and forty billion naira for the year 2024.
This significant milestone was disclosed by the Comptroller of the Command, Mr. Dera Nnadi, during a press briefing held in Lagos.
Mr. Nnadi clarified that the revenue figures encompassed earnings from January, February, and the period spanning March 1st to 14th, 2024.
Highlighting the command’s monthly revenue target set at N94 billion, Mr. Nnadi emphasized that surpassing this benchmark signifies a remarkable achievement. He stated, “What this means is that we have been able to surpass our expected revenue target of N188 billion for January and February. By way of percentage, we have surpassed our January revenue target by 107 percent and also surpassed our February target by 141 percent.”
Regarding March’s performance, Mr. Nnadi refrained from providing specific figures, citing the ongoing nature of the month.
In addition to revenue generation, the Tin-Can Island Command also reported successful seizures of illicit items, including a cache of arms, ammunition, and narcotics smuggled into the country. The confiscated items comprised military camouflage, 11 rifles, six pistols, as well as illicit drugs such as Colorado, heroin, and cocaine, valued at millions of naira.
Although individuals apprehended in connection with these seizures remain in custody, Mr. Nnadi opted not to disclose their identities or vessel details to safeguard ongoing investigations.
Expressing the gravity of the situation, Mr. Nnadi underscored the potential threat posed by the intercepted weapons and drugs if they had fallen into the hands of criminals, highlighting their potential to exacerbate security challenges in the nation.
Acknowledging the collaborative efforts between the Nigeria Customs Service and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the Commandant Narcotics, NDLEA, Tin Can Island Port, Mohammed Aminu Abubakar, attributed the successful seizures to this partnership.
