Three Students, Okada Rider Killed in Oyo Truck Accident

Ibadan, NigeriaTragedy struck in Ibadan’s Oluyole Local Government Area on Tuesday morning as a road accident claimed the lives of three secondary school students and a commercial motorcycle rider.

The unfortunate incident occurred when a speeding truck owned by a construction firm fatally collided with a motorcycle conveying students of Prospect High School, Abanla, along the Abanla–Idi-Ayunre road. Eyewitnesses reported that the truck driver lost control while attempting to overtake another vehicle.

In a statement issued by the Oluyole Local Government Chairman, Asiwaju Akeem Olatunji, he confirmed the deaths and described the accident as deeply heartbreaking. “This is one tragedy too many,” he said, expressing sympathy to the grieving families and vowing to pursue justice.

Two students and the motorcycle rider died instantly, while the third student succumbed to injuries at a nearby hospital. The truck driver reportedly fled the scene and is currently at large, with police launching an active investigation.

The news sparked immediate protests from students and residents, who blocked the road in anger. Olatunji, accompanied by security personnel, met with demonstrators and assured them of prompt government action.

He criticized the recklessness of some trailer drivers and commercial motorcyclists and emphasized the need for strict adherence to traffic laws. He also stated that had the commercial rider followed passenger limits, the tragedy might have been avoided.

“We cannot continue to lose our children to preventable accidents,” Olatunji said, announcing the immediate construction of speed bumps and clearance of roadside bushes to enhance visibility.

The chairman confirmed that the truck had been impounded and pledged that the driver and the construction company would be held accountable. Discussions are ongoing to ensure compensation for the bereaved families and enforce tighter safety protocols for heavy-duty vehicles.

As the community mourns the loss of its young members, the atmosphere at Prospect High School remains heavy with grief.
