Abeokuta, Ogun State — An Ogun State High Court has sentenced three individuals to death by hanging for the brutal murder of Kehinde and Bukola Fatinoye, along with their son, Oreoluwa, on New Year’s Day 2023.
Presiding over the case, Justice Basirat Adebowale found Adekambi Lekan, a former driver of the victims, along with Odetola Ahmed and Adeniyi Waheed, guilty after a judgment that lasted over three hours.
The three convicts were among nine defendants arraigned on a 24-count charge, including conspiracy to commit armed robbery, armed robbery, conspiracy to murder, murder, arson, escape from lawful custody, perverting the course of justice, and receiving stolen property.
Justice Adebowale ruled that the prosecution had established its case beyond a reasonable doubt, confirming that the trio murdered the Fatinoyes before setting their bodies ablaze. She stressed that the gravity of their crimes warranted no leniency.
The court sentenced the defendants to death by hanging or lethal injection, alongside additional penalties, including life imprisonment with hard labor and a 14-year prison term.
“The sentence of this court on Adekambi Lekan in respect of Count II is that he be hanged by the neck until he is dead or by lethal injection,” Justice Adebowale pronounced. “May God have mercy on your soul.”
Lekan’s wife, Fadairo Temitope, was convicted and sentenced to four years in prison, with her sentences to run concurrently. His mother, Adekambi Adenike, was acquitted of most charges but received a one-year prison sentence for another offense.
The gruesome attack took place on January 1, 2023, shortly after the Fatinoye family returned home from a crossover service at Christ Anglican Church, Iporo-Ake, Abeokuta. The assailants ambushed the family, killed them, and set their bodies on fire.
The attackers also tied up their adopted son, Olorunyomi Felix, along with Oreoluwa, and threw them into the Ogun River. Tragically, Oreoluwa did not survive.
Authorities revealed that the perpetrators took advantage of New Year’s Eve festivities to carry out their deadly act.
