Three staff members of a high school in Sanski Most, western Bosnia, were shot and killed by a fellow employee who then attempted to take his own life, local police reported.
Adnan Beganovic, spokesperson for the Una-Sana Canton police, confirmed that authorities received a report about the shooting at 10:15 a.m. (0815 GMT).
According to Beganovic, the suspect, armed with an automatic rifle, shot and killed the school’s dean, secretary, and a teacher. “He then attempted suicide and was critically injured,” Beganovic added.
The suspect was rushed to a hospital in Banja Luka for emergency medical care, while an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
At the time of the shooting, the school was closed for summer break, and no students were present.
Local media outlet N1 TV, citing witnesses, reported that the shooter was a janitor who had long-standing disputes with the school’s administration and was undergoing disciplinary action. The report suggests that the janitor specifically targeted certain individuals, though this information has not been independently confirmed by Reuters.
Mass shootings are uncommon in the Western Balkans, though the region still deals with leftover weapons from conflicts in the 1990s. In a separate incident in July, a war veteran in Croatia killed five people, including his mother, at a nursing home and injured six others.
