Three Dead, Five Rescued as Migrant Boat Sinks Off Greek Coast

Three individuals have lost their lives, while five others were rescued after a migrant boat capsized near the Greek island of Samos in the Aegean Sea, authorities reported on Monday.

“Three bodies have been recovered from the water, and five survivors are now safe,” an official from the port police told AFP.

A large-scale search operation is currently underway to locate any remaining missing persons. Some local reports suggest that up to 20 more people may still be unaccounted for.

Greece, a key entry point for migrants escaping conflict and poverty in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, frequently sees such tragic accidents off its shores. The boat sank in the early hours of Monday near the northwest coast of Samos, a Greek island located close to Turkey—a common departure point for migrants attempting to reach the European Union.
