A landlord named Obong Ete, residing on Waddel Street in Calabar South, Cross River State, was severely beaten by his tenants and neighbors for allegedly robbing them. The incident occurred on Sunday as residents were preparing for church services.
Witnesses reported that Ete, in his 30s and a bachelor, had a history of terrorizing the neighborhood, often stealing food items and household goods at night. John Akpan, a resident, stated, “Obong Ete has been doing this for a long time. It is good that he is again publicly disgraced. He doesn’t want to repent.” He added that community youth leaders and vigilante groups had previously confronted Ete after tracing stolen items back to his apartment.
Tenant Magdalene Effiom mentioned, “We learned from his family that he once stole from a church, and worshippers laid curses on him. Perhaps these curses are affecting him.”

After the beating, local youth leaders forced Ete to swear an oath promising to stop his alleged criminal activities. He expressed remorse, stating, “I am sorry for stealing. I swear that I will not continue to steal again,” and agreed to accept any consequences if he reoffended.
The youth leaders also suspected a young man living with Ete of being an accomplice and expelled him from the community, warning him not to return.
In response to the incident, Police PRO Irene Ugbo condemned the vigilante justice by the tenants stating that such matters should be reported to the police instead.
