Ibadan, Oyo State— A rent dispute tragically ended with the death of a tenant known as Olayeni in the Oriyangi area of Ibadan.
The Oyo State Police Command confirmed in a statement on its official X account that the incident happened on Wednesday, September 3, 2025.
According to the police, the landlord had called a friend to help mediate during an argument over rent, but the situation escalated into violence when the friend allegedly struck the tenant, causing him to collapse.
“On September 3, 2025, a tenant’s life was lost in Ibadan’s Oriyangi district following a dispute with his landlord regarding rent payments.
“During the confrontation, the landlord’s associate struck Olayeni, which led to his sudden collapse.
“Emergency services responded swiftly, but unfortunately, Olayeni was pronounced dead at the hospital,” the statement added.
Both the landlord and his associate have been arrested and are being thoroughly investigated.
“The suspects are now in custody, and an in-depth investigation is ongoing,” the police said.
The Oyo State Police extended condolences to the bereaved family and assured that justice will be served.
