Abuja, Nigeria — Super Eagles winger Nathan Tella has cleared the air on rumors suggesting he deliberately turned down an invitation to join Nigeria’s national team, labeling the speculation as a “misunderstanding.”
Speaking from the team’s camp ahead of their highly anticipated Unity Cup 2025 fixture against Ghana’s Black Stars, the Bayer Leverkusen forward clarified that his absence from the squad during a previous invitation was due to an injury setback, not a lack of interest or commitment.
Tella expressed his disappointment over Nigeria’s underwhelming performance in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, stating that the players are determined to turn things around.
“It’s painful watching things go wrong. We know the effort it takes to qualify for the World Cup. At this point, we just have to focus on what’s within our reach — play hard, win games, and restore hope,” he said.
Looking ahead to the clash with long-time rivals Ghana, Tella emphasized the significance of the encounter: “This is one of Africa’s fiercest football rivalries. To be a part of it is truly special, and I’ve always looked forward to moments like this.”
