Google latest smart phone the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro are using AI feature to help alter people’s expressions in photographs.
AI technologies are now evolving in our daily lives. From Voice-activated virtual assistants, to recommendation systems, self-driving cars, AI-powered healthcare applications ana AI face alteration are becoming more common.
With AI evolution Google’s phones can now look through users photos to mix and match from past expressions, to put a smile from a different photo of them into the picture.
The devices also allows users to remove, rearrange, and resize undesirable components from photos, such as people and buildings, “filling up in” the empty spaces with a feature dubbed Magic Editor.
However,the new Google AI technology has been described as posing a threat to people’s trust on online content.
As AI creates extremely lifelike films or photographs by superimposing one person’s face onto another, deep fake technology poses questions about privacy, consent and ethical use, which has the potential to spread false information and impersonate other people.
Samsung faced criticism earlier this year for utilizing deep learning techniques to enhance the quality of Moon photographs taken with its devices.
The company accepting the criticism said it was making efforts to reduce any potential confusion that may occur between the act of taking a picture of the real Moon and an image of the Moon.
As much as AI technology like the deepfake face alteration technology is fun, creative and improves photo aesthetic, it raises significant concerns and debates.
It could be used to create convincing but entirely fabricated videos or images, leading to the spread of false information, forged evidence, and potential manipulation of public perception.
Such content may be used to violate individuals’ privacy and causing emotional distress or reputational damage.
Cyberbullies and fraud can use deepfake to impersonate or mimick someone’s voice or appearance.
The proliferation challenges the credibility of digital media, making it hard to distinguish between genuine and manipulated of visual evidence in journalism and legal proceedings.
These debates and concerns can be tackled if strict laws and regulations centers on AI development techniques.
