The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced planned power outages in parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to facilitate maintenance work at two major transmission substations.
Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, disclosed in a statement on Saturday that the outages will affect Gwagwalada and surrounding areas on Saturday, December 28, and parts of Abuja on Sunday, December 29.
On Saturday, power supply in Gwagwalada will be interrupted between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. to allow engineers to carry out maintenance on a 60MVA transformer and switchgear at the Gwagwalada 330/132/33kV Substation.
Similarly, maintenance work at the Kukwaba 132/33kV Substation on Sunday will disrupt power in areas such as Wuye, EFCC, Federal Medical Centre, Coca-Cola, Idu Railway Station, Citec, and Life Camp from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
TCN apologized for the inconvenience and reassured residents that the maintenance is crucial for sustaining optimal performance of power infrastructure.
This proactive effort comes as Nigeria continues to experience frequent national grid collapses in 2024, underscoring the need for improved grid stability. The country is also working to add 150 megawatts to the national grid by the end of the year, further emphasizing the importance of infrastructure upgrades.
