Tax Reform Is Here To Stay, Tinubu Declares

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the recently introduced tax reform, emphasizing that it is essential for reviving Nigeria’s economy.

Speaking during his maiden presidential media chat on Monday night, Tinubu stated that the economy cannot thrive on outdated practices. “Tax reform is here to stay; we cannot just continue to do what we were doing years to years in today’s economy,” he said. “We cannot retool this economy with the old broken books, and I believe I have that capacity, which is why I went into the race.”

The President further stressed his focus on reshaping the nation’s economic trajectory, even if it involves difficult decisions. “I am focused on what Nigeria needs and what I must do for Nigeria. It is not just going to be eldorado for everybody, but the new dawn is here. I am convinced, and you should be convinced,” Tinubu added.

On October 3, the President submitted four tax reform bills to the National Assembly, a move that has sparked widespread controversy, particularly in the northern regions of the country.

Despite resistance, including advice from the National Economic Council to withdraw the bills for further consultation, Tinubu insisted that the legislative process must proceed. “The bills should go through the necessary legislative processes,” he maintained, dismissing calls for their withdrawal.

The proposed reforms, while contentious, underscore Tinubu’s determination to implement changes aimed at addressing Nigeria’s fiscal challenges and setting the economy on a path to recovery.
