Tanker Explosion Sparks Inferno on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

Ogun State, NigeriaA devastating fire broke out on Wednesday afternoon along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway after a petrol-laden tanker exploded near the NASFAT U-Turn, setting several vehicles ablaze and causing a major traffic snarl.

The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) confirmed the explosion, which occurred on the outbound Lagos section of the expressway, triggering widespread gridlock in the area.

The incident was also verified by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Sector Command. In a statement issued by Florence Okpe, the command’s Public Education Officer, she noted that FRSC personnel, alongside firefighters, promptly responded to the emergency. However, she stated that as of press time, there were no confirmed casualties.

Several vehicles parked or in motion near the tanker were engulfed in flames as the fire quickly spread from the point of explosion.

TRACE spokesperson Babatunde Akinbiyi issued an update, highlighting the seriousness of the situation: “The petrol tanker fell and exploded at the NASFAT turnoff on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway outbound lane. The resulting fire disrupted traffic flow significantly. Motorists coming from Lagos are currently being redirected through the Christ Embassy Camp axis.”

Emergency responders, including the Fire Service, TRACE, FRSC, and police units, were on the ground coordinating rescue and traffic management efforts.

Authorities continue to monitor the area while cleanup operations and investigations into the cause of the tanker’s fall and explosion are underway.
