Barcelona, Spain — La Liga champions FC Barcelona have confirmed the contract extension of veteran goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, securing his stay at the club until 2027.
The announcement came via an official statement from the Catalan club on Monday, describing Szczesny’s renewal as both a reward and recognition for his remarkable performance during the past season.
“The Polish goalkeeper staying is recognition and a prize for his great season between the sticks for Barça, after an unexpected arrival in a strange context,” the statement read.
Szczesny, 35, had previously retired from professional football before being recalled in October to step in for Marc-André ter Stegen, who sustained a season-threatening patella tendon injury. Rising to the occasion, Szczesny played a pivotal role in Barcelona’s La Liga and Copa del Rey triumphs, with Ter Stegen only returning to the squad late in the campaign.
The decision to retain Szczesny comes amid growing uncertainty surrounding Ter Stegen’s future at the club. The German international, 33, is one of Barcelona’s highest earners, and reports suggest the financially-strained club may be open to trimming its wage bill.
Adding to the competitive landscape, Barcelona recently signed Joan García from Espanyol in a €26.34 million deal spanning six years. Alongside García and Szczesny, the club still retains Iñaki Peña, making the goalkeeping department one to watch in the coming months.
The club reiterated its commitment to building a competitive squad and praised Szczesny’s leadership and resilience in helping navigate a challenging season.
