Super Falcons Celebrate WAFCON Victory with Trophy Parade in Lagos

Lagos, Nigeria – Fresh from their historic triumph at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, Nigeria’s Super Falcons lit up the streets of Lagos on Wednesday with a grand trophy parade in celebration of their record-extending 10th continental title.

The team, who had earlier been received by President Bola Tinubu in Abuja on Monday, arrived in Lagos to continued celebrations, still energized by their national honours and financial rewards. Each player was awarded $100,000, while members of the 11-man technical crew received $50,000 apiece, alongside three-bedroom homes and the prestigious Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) title.

The parade commenced from Costain, weaving through Eko Bridge, Apogbon, Obalende, Ikoyi Road, and Victoria Island, before concluding around the Eko Hotel axis. Along the route, the team received a warm, though modest, welcome from enthusiastic fans.

The Falcons’ journey to the title was as dramatic as it was impressive. They secured top spot in their group with seven points and without conceding a single goal. A 5-0 demolition of Zambia in the quarter-finals was followed by a narrow 2-1 semi-final victory over South Africa, sealed by a late goal from Michelle Alozie.

In the final, the team staged a stunning comeback from two goals down to defeat hosts Morocco 3-2, with second-half strikes from Esther Okoronkwo, Folashade Ijamilusi, and Jennifer Echegini securing the win.

Their dominant display also earned them individual accolades, with Rasheedat Ajibade named Player of the Tournament, Chiamaka Nnadozie awarded Best Goalkeeper, and Coach Justine Madugu taking home the Best Coach honour.

The victory adds to the Falcons’ illustrious legacy, marking their 10th WAFCON title, following previous wins in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2016, and 2018.

As national pride soars, the Super Falcons continue to inspire a new generation of female athletes across the continent.
