Lagos, Nigeria — The Super Eagles have expressed unwavering support for Ademola Lookman following criticism from Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini over his missed penalty in their UEFA Champions League defeat to Club Brugge.
In a show of solidarity, Nigeria’s senior men’s national team took to their official X handle, reposting Lookman’s response with the caption: “We are with you, Ade.” The page also celebrated his season’s achievements, highlighting his 17 goals and 7 assists, while sharing clips of his best moments with the tagline: “Ademola The King.”
Lookman Responds to Gasperini’s Comments
Lookman had found the net after coming on as a second-half substitute but later missed a crucial penalty, drawing sharp criticism from Gasperini, who labeled him “one of the worst penalty takers I’ve ever seen.”
Reacting to the comments, Lookman released a heartfelt statement on Wednesday, expressing disappointment over the remarks.
“It saddens me to have to make this statement on a day like this, given what we have accomplished together as a team and as a city. Being singled out in such a manner is not only painful but also deeply disrespectful. I have always given my all for this club and the incredible fans of Bergamo.”
He further clarified that the team’s designated penalty taker had instructed him to take the spot-kick, and he accepted the responsibility in the moment for the benefit of the squad.
“Life is about challenges and turning pain into power, and I will continue to do just that,” he concluded.
Fans and Teammates Stand by Lookman
Despite the Champions League setback, Lookman remains one of Atalanta’s standout performers this season. His teammates and supporters have continued to back him, emphasizing his contributions and resilience.
As the season progresses, the Nigerian forward remains focused on delivering strong performances, turning adversity into motivation for future success.
