Kwara State, Nigeria — Bashir Alabi, popularly known as Arabambi, a passionate supporter of the Super Eagles and Kwara United, has shared his lifelong journey as a football fan and his dream of cheering Nigeria at the FIFA World Cup.
In an interview, Arabambi explained how his nickname came from his admiration for Fuji star Pasuma, once called Arabambi. He is known for his distinctive body paintings during matches — a practice he has maintained for over 25 years using special, non-harmful chemicals.
Recounting his early days, Arabambi said he started out as a ball boy in Ilorin before training under renowned coaches like Kabiru Dogo, now at El-Kanemi Warriors. Though he once played football and table tennis competitively, he eventually shifted focus to showmanship in fan culture, founding a Kwara United supporters’ group in 2004. Over the years, he has supported clubs including Enyimba, Nasarawa United, Lobi Stars, and Osun United, gaining recognition nationwide.
Reflecting on Kwara United’s first-ever President Federation Cup triumph this year, Arabambi admitted he was emotional during the penalty shootout, saying the victory was a dream fulfilled after years of unwavering support.
He also recounted his experiences at international tournaments, including AFCON in Cameroon and Ivory Coast, where his unique style drew attention, even entertaining businessman Obi Cubana. However, he lamented internal rifts and poor treatment within some supporters’ groups.
Arabambi has toured nearly every Nigerian state for football and travelled abroad to Ghana, Rwanda, Cameroon, Togo, and Saudi Arabia, among others. Despite challenges such as neglect, lack of funding, and sometimes being stranded, he insists his passion keeps him going.
Asked about his ultimate dream, Arabambi said it rests on Nigeria’s qualification for the next World Cup. “If the Eagles qualify, my dream of being at the World Cup will finally come true,” he said.
