Sultan Postpones Qur’an Convention Over High Participation

Abuja, Nigeria  —  The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has announced the indefinite postponement of the highly anticipated Qur’an Convention due to an unprecedented surge in participation requests.

The decision was conveyed in a statement released on Friday night by the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) and signed by its Secretary-General, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede.

Originally scheduled for February 22, 2025, at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja, the event was designed to host 60,000 attendees, including 30,000 Huffaz (Qur’an memorisers). However, registration requests have now surpassed 500,000, far exceeding initial projections.

Speaking on the development, the Sultan described the overwhelming response as a testament to the deep reverence and commitment of the Muslim community to the Qur’an.

“Our intention was to create a spiritually enriching event uniting scholars, Huffaz, and participants nationwide. However, the scale of interest has surpassed expectations, making it necessary to reassess our logistics and ensure an inclusive, well-structured gathering,” he stated.

The NSCIA further revealed that the convention had attracted growing international attention, with renowned Islamic scholars and foreign delegations expressing their desire to participate.

Following consultations with key stakeholders, the council confirmed that the convention would be rescheduled after Ramadan, allowing for better organization and expanded capacity.

While acknowledging the disappointment this postponement may bring, the council assured prospective attendees that the delay would enhance the event’s quality, logistics, and overall experience.

The Sultan reaffirmed the commitment of the NSCIA to delivering a historic and impactful gathering that honors the Qur’an and its teachings.
