Students’ Union Refutes NANS Allegations Against FUOYE VC and Governing Council

Abuja, NigeriaThe Students Union Government (SUG) of Federal University, Oye Ekiti (FUOYE) has strongly rejected the allegations made by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) President, Olusola Oladoja, against the institution’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abayomi Fasina, and its Governing Council.

The response was made by the FUOYE SUG President, Olorunsola Abiodun, and Secretary General, Ife Lateef, in a letter to the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, dated Saturday. The student leaders distanced themselves from the petition submitted by the NANS president, emphasizing that it did not represent the views of FUOYE students.

In his petition titled “Petition on the crisis at FUOYE” on May 2, NANS President Oladoja alleged cover-ups and misconduct by the university’s management and Governing Council. He called for the removal of the Vice Chancellor and the Chairman of the Governing Council, Senator Victor Udoma-Egba, and demanded the formation of an independent panel to review the allegations within 72 hours.

However, in the SUG’s response letter, “Re: Formal Disclaimer and Refutation of the NANS Petition Against the VC and Governing Council of FUOYE,” Abiodun and Lateef dismissed these allegations as misrepresentations. They asserted that the NANS claims were aimed at undermining the leadership and integrity of FUOYE, stating, “As student leaders committed to justice, transparency, and the welfare of our constituents, we will not stand by while misinformation is weaponized to discredit our university’s progress.”

The student leaders further called on the Minister of Education to disregard the petition, describing it as lacking credibility and factual merit. They reaffirmed the legitimacy of the FUOYE SUG as the authentic and democratically elected voice of the student body.

Addressing the allegations of sexual harassment involving the Vice Chancellor and a staff member, the SUG emphasized that both the Nigeria Police Force and an investigative panel appointed by the Governing Council had thoroughly examined the issue. Both investigations exonerated Prof. Fasina, and the findings were made public.

“We, as student representatives, have reviewed the reports and reaffirm our confidence in the integrity and transparency of the investigative processes,” said Abiodun and Lateef.

The SUG also rejected the claims regarding Dr. Agbegbedia’s promotion, stating that the promotion had already been approved by the University Council prior to the sexual harassment allegations. They also addressed the tragic death of their colleague, Modupe, urging that it not be politicized. The SUG stated that a comprehensive investigation had been conducted, and no administrative negligence was found.

“Under Prof. Fasina’s leadership, the university has made significant strides in academic expansion, infrastructure, staff welfare, and campus security. There are no credible reports or audits suggesting financial impropriety,” the SUG added.

They concluded by emphasizing that, throughout their tenure, the leadership of FUOYE has supported the Students’ Union, fostering collaboration and promoting the welfare of students.
