Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile-Ife, have expressed their readiness to comply with the strike action directed by the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and Trade Union Congress, TUC.
Making this known to journalists on Tuesday, the OAU ASUU Chairman, Prof Anthony Odiwe said the Union had directed all its members to withdraw their services with effect from the midnight of Tuesday, November 14.
This, Odiwe said, is in compliance with the national directive.
He said, “I have already sent messages and directives to our members. We will comply. I’m getting ready to come to school, we need to drop a letter to the Vice-Chancellor to inform him officially.”
NLC had declared a total nationwide strike effective Tuesday, November 14, 2023.
The strike action is in protest of the assault on Joe Ajaero, the President of the NLC, by the police in Owerri, Imo State, early in the month.
Also, the strike was directed to press home the demand of the labour unions for the redeployment of the Imo State Commissioner of Police.
The police had denied arresting Ajaero, insisting that he was taken into protective custody to prevent a mob attack.
