Stampede at New Delhi Railway Station Claims 18 Lives

New Delhi, India —  A tragic stampede at a railway station in New Delhi on Saturday night left at least 18 people dead, including 14 women, as thousands of Hindu pilgrims rushed to board a train bound for the Maha Kumbh festival in Prayagraj.

The chaos erupted when several passengers lost their footing while descending a footbridge linking train platforms, triggering widespread panic, according to Delhi’s caretaker Chief Minister, Atishi. Eyewitnesses reported that a last-minute announcement regarding a platform change intensified the confusion, contributing to the deadly surge.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the incident, stating via social media platform X, “My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. I pray for the swift recovery of the injured. Authorities are providing necessary support to those affected.”

In response to the tragedy, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that an investigation had been launched to determine the exact cause and assess potential lapses in crowd control measures.

This disaster comes just weeks after a similar stampede at the Maha Kumbh festival, where 30 people lost their lives as millions of devotees gathered to partake in the sacred ritual of bathing in the river.

The incident has reignited concerns over crowd management and safety protocols at major public gatherings and transportation hubs in India. Authorities now face mounting pressure to implement stronger measures to prevent future tragedies.
