Lagos, Nigeria — The rhythm of Africa isn’t just resonating globally , it’s raking in millions. Leading audio streaming platform, Spotify, has announced a groundbreaking payout of $59 million in royalties to artists from Nigeria and South Africa in 2024 alone, reflecting the booming global appetite for Afrobeats and Amapiano.
According to the report, Nigerian musicians received a whopping ₦58 billion (approximately $38 million), marking more than a 100% increase from the previous year. Meanwhile, their South African counterparts earned over 400 million rand (around $21 million), reflecting a 54% year-on-year growth.
The revenue surge isn’t exclusive to global icons like Burna Boy or Tyla. Spotify disclosed that emerging and mid-level artists are now generating steady income, buoyed by heightened international visibility. Nigerian artists now appear in over 250 million playlists, while South African acts feature in 220 million and counting.
In a statement by Jocelyne Muhutu-Remy, See Spotify’s Managing Director for Sub-Saharan Africa, she highlighted the transformative growth in artist earnings.
“There’s a clear shift — more and more mid-tier and rising stars are now able to make a decent living through streaming,” she noted.
The platform also revealed an exponential rise in music exports, with Nigerian tracks witnessing a 49% growth over the past three years, and South African songs experiencing a massive 104% jump.
As the global soundscape continues to embrace Africa’s dynamic beats, the future looks promising , not just in fame, but in financial returns for the continent’s vibrant music industry.
