Sporting Lisbon has dismissed Joao Pereira, who took over from Ruben Amorim, after just eight games in charge.
The club confirmed Pereira’s departure on Thursday via their X account, with a brief message thanking him for his efforts: “A Lion forever. Thank you, Joao Pereira.”
Pereira, formerly in charge of Sporting Lisbon’s B team, was promoted following Amorim’s departure to Manchester United. Amorim, who took his entire backroom staff with him to Old Trafford, had recommended Pereira as his successor.
However, Pereira’s tenure was marked by struggles, with the team winning only three of his eight matches. Sporting Lisbon, which was unbeaten and top of the league when Amorim left, now sits one point behind leaders Benfica. Their most recent disappointment came on Sunday with a goalless draw against mid-table Gil Vicente, prompting protests from fans.
Sporting officials, unimpressed by several errors, decided to part ways with Pereira despite his brief time in charge.
Meanwhile, Amorim’s start at Manchester United has also been challenging, with the team suffering a surprising 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth, following a win over rivals Manchester City.
