Osogbo, Nigeria— Political tension has escalated in Osun State following the defection of two Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senators to the All Progressives Congress (APC), fueling speculation that Governor Ademola Adeleke may soon follow suit.
Senators Francis Fadahunsi (Osun East) and Olubiyi Fadeyi (Osun Central) formally tendered their resignations from the PDP on June 21, both citing irreconcilable internal party disputes as their motivation for switching allegiance.
The senators’ departure has rattled both PDP and APC supporters, particularly those backing various APC governorship hopefuls, who now fear shifting party dynamics. Some APC loyalists have voiced concern that Adeleke’s possible entry into the party would hinder their preferred candidates’ chances for the party ticket.
Former Deputy Governor Senator Iyiola Omisore criticized Adeleke for reportedly attempting to join the APC through unofficial channels. “The governor should engage state party leaders directly, not try to gain entry through outside influence. Without notification to the state or national chairman, members cannot be certain of his intentions,” Omisore stated.
In contrast, Oladele Oyelude, Coordinator of Tinubu-Shettima Ambassadors, welcomed the prospect of Adeleke joining the APC. He argued that Adeleke’s popularity could significantly benefit the party and President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid.
“There’s no merit in antagonizing Adeleke’s move. His support base is an asset, and we should let him join before hashing out other interests,” Oyelude asserted.
