South-South Governors Elect Douye Diri as Forum Chair

Yenagoa, Bayelsa State —  Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has emerged as the new Chairman of the South-South Governors’ Forum.

The announcement was made during a strategic meeting held on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, at the Government House, Yenagoa, where regional leaders gathered to discuss key issues affecting the South-South region.

In a communiqué issued after the meeting, the governors emphasized their renewed commitment to fostering unity and advancing sustainable development for the region.

“The forum reaffirmed its dedication to collaborative governance aimed at improving the welfare of the people and strengthening partnerships for sustainable progress in the South-South,” the communiqué read.

Governor Diri, who is serving his second term, was unanimously chosen to lead the forum as it navigates strategies for the region’s growth and prosperity.

Governors in attendance included Bassey Otu of Cross River, Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta, Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers, and Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom, along with the host governor, Douye Diri of Bayelsa.

However, Senator Monday Okpebholo, the Governor of Edo State, was notably absent and did not send his deputy, Dennis Idahosa, as a representative.

The forum’s agenda centered on enhancing regional cooperation and implementing development strategies that address socio-economic challenges in the South-South.

Under Governor Diri’s leadership, the forum pledged to intensify efforts toward fostering regional growth and promoting unity among the member states.
