South African Court Declares Zuma Ineligible for Public Office

South Africa’s Constitutional Court has declared former President Jacob Zuma ineligible to hold public office, including a seat in parliament.

The decision follows Zuma’s controversial presidency, which was plagued by corruption allegations and numerous scandals.

Zuma, who was sentenced to 15 months in prison for contempt of court in 2021, had been nominated by the African National Congress (ANC) to represent the party in the National Assembly.

The court upheld the electoral commission’s decision, stating that Zuma’s previous conviction for contempt of court disqualifies him from becoming a Member of Parliament. The constitution prohibits anyone sentenced to more than 12 months in jail from holding public office. The judges unanimously concluded that Zuma’s criminal record and his breach of the constitution he vowed to uphold make him unfit for public office.

This ruling is considered a significant triumph for South Africa’s democratic institutions and a robust stance against impunity and corruption.

Zuma’s legal team has yet to comment on the ruling, though an appeal is anticipated.
