The Sokoto State Ministry of Health has issued a warning to residents following a surge in cases of Acute Hemorrhagic Conjunctivitis, locally known as ‘Apollo.’ The infection, which has become increasingly prevalent in recent weeks, has raised concerns across the state, prompting health authorities to intensify public awareness and preventive measures.
Announcing the development, the Commissioner for Health, Hajiya Asabe Balarabe, explained that Apollo is a highly contagious eye infection that presents symptoms such as a sudden onset of red eyes, swelling, pain, and a watery discharge. “This infection spreads rapidly through direct contact with infected individuals or through contaminated surfaces, making it essential for residents to be aware and vigilant,” she stated.
In response to the outbreak, the Ministry of Health has launched a public health campaign aimed at educating residents on the importance of adhering to preventive measures to curb the infection’s spread. According to Hajiya Balarabe, these measures include practicing good hygiene, avoiding the sharing of personal items, regularly disinfecting commonly touched surfaces, maintaining social distance where possible, and refraining from touching or rubbing the eyes.
“The Ministry has been actively sensitizing communities on these preventive steps to limit the spread of Apollo,” she noted, emphasizing the need for collective action in managing the outbreak.
The Commissioner added that the health ministry is closely monitoring the situation and advised residents to report any suspected cases of Apollo or other diseases to health authorities for swift intervention. “We are committed to keeping our communities safe and will take prompt action to address any further spread of the disease,” she assured.
Health experts recommend that individuals experiencing symptoms should avoid crowded places, wash their hands frequently, and seek medical attention promptly to prevent further transmission. The Sokoto State government continues to collaborate with healthcare providers to ensure that adequate support is available to affected individuals while also working on long-term preventive strategies to protect public health.
