Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima has urged Nigerians to reject the planned nationwide protests set to begin on August 1, advocating for unity and focused development instead.
Senator Shettima emphasized that protests have never been a solution for nations’ challenges, often leading to the destruction of lives and properties. He called for peace and unity in a statement by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media & Communications, Office of the Vice President. The Vice President made this appeal while attending a wedding ceremony in Maiduguri, Borno State, where the Shehu of Borno, His Royal Highness Dr. Abubakar Ibn Umar Garba Al Amin El-Kanemi, gave four of his daughters in marriage.
Appealing to Nigerians to avoid the planned protests, Senator Shettima highlighted that President Tinubu is committed to addressing the nation’s longstanding challenges. He urged citizens to trust the Federal Government’s efforts, assuring that the administration’s initiatives would soon yield significant economic and social benefits.
The Vice President also pointed out that the organizers of the proposed protests are operating from outside Nigeria, urging citizens to learn from the turmoil in Sudan, Syria, and Libya. “They are not in this country; we need to learn a lot of lessons from what happened in Syria and in Libya. What they are agitating for is a road to Khartoum, Damascus, and Tripoli. Insha Allah, the people of Nigeria will not dance to the tune of these anarchists and saboteurs,” he stated.
Religious and traditional institutions, along with public office holders, have also advised Nigerians, especially the youth, to seek alternative ways to express their grievances rather than resorting to protests, which could be hijacked by non-state actors.
