Former Kano State Governor, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, has voiced his deep concern over the ongoing dispute surrounding the Emirship in Kano, while emphasizing his decision to remain uninvolved in the matter.
Speaking on Channels TV’s *Politics Today*, Shekarau attributed the crisis to political interference and called for a peaceful resolution. He stressed the significance of the traditional institution in maintaining societal harmony.
“As a senior member of the Emirate Council and a former governor of Kano, I am deeply troubled by this situation,” Shekarau said. “However, once the matter went to court, I decided not to discuss or interfere, regardless of the circumstances.”
Shekarau expressed his desire for peace in Kano, highlighting the critical role the traditional institution plays in the state. “I want everything in Kano to be peaceful. We are waiting, and my prayer is that we overcome this issue soon,” he added. “The traditional institution is essential, and as someone who belongs to it, I choose not to delve into the details.”
The former governor criticized the involvement of politicians in the affairs of the emirate, suggesting that such interference has worsened the crisis. He lamented the lack of proper engagement between political leaders and the traditional institution, which he believes could have averted the current discord.
“It was political interference that led us into this crisis,” Shekarau remarked. “Had politicians kept their distance, and had the traditional institution been properly engaged, I don’t believe there would be any disagreement. Traditional institutions and political leaders each have their roles in society, and there needs to be a synergy of understanding.”
Reflecting on his time as governor, Shekarau highlighted the collaborative efforts he undertook with the Emir of Kano to address social issues, such as the almajiri system. He pointed to the establishment of a 50-member Almajiri Council, co-chaired by himself and the Emir, as a successful example of cooperation between traditional and political leadership for the betterment of society.
