Senators Begin Annual Recess, To Resume Work on Sept 23

Abuja, NigeriaThe Nigerian Senate has officially adjourned plenary to commence its annual recess, with lawmakers set to reconvene on September 23, 2025.

The motion to proceed on recess was moved by Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, during Thursday’s session in Abuja and adopted by the Red Chamber.

In his closing remarks, Senate President Godswill Akpabio stated that the break aligns with the legislative calendar, following the earlier adjournment of the House of Representatives. He explained that since the 10th National Assembly began a fresh calendar in June, the recess is in line with standard legislative practices.

“This recess is only for plenary. Committee duties remain active. That’s what you were elected to do,” Akpabio emphasized.

He directed all standing committees, especially those on diaspora, reparations, and interior, to maximize the period by conducting oversight visits, particularly to correctional facilities and federal projects across the country.

Akpabio assured lawmakers that all reports from such assignments will be considered promptly after resumption. He also extended prayers for safety, health, and a restful break to all Senators.

On a solemn note, he informed the chamber of the death of Professor Janet Plang, wife of Senator Diket Plang, urging senators to travel as a delegation to Plateau State for the burial on Friday.

Earlier, Senator Bamidele commended the senators for their commitment throughout the session, before moving a motion to defer all remaining items on the Order Paper until the next legislative day.

With that, the 10th Senate formally entered recess ahead of its September return.
