Senate Probes Allegations Against USAID released funds

Abuja, Nigeria  —  The Senate has summoned top security officials to investigate claims linking the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to terrorism financing.

The decision follows a motion by Senator Ali Ndume, who urged an immediate probe into allegations raised in a viral video featuring U.S. Congressman Scott Perry.  The video accuses USAID of funding terrorist groups, including Boko Haram.

At the plenary, lawmakers expressed serious concerns over the claims, emphasizing the need for transparency and national security vigilance. Consequently, the Senate has called on National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, alongside the heads of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) and the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), to provide clarity on the matter.

Meanwhile, international humanitarian efforts face uncertainty as funding cuts under Donald Trump’s administration threaten aid programs, leaving millions at risk. Reports indicate that USAID-affiliated NGOs received suspension notices just days after Trump resumed office on January 24, 2025.

The Senate reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring national security while seeking factual clarity on the allegations.
