Abuja, Nigeria — The Nigerian Senate has announced plans to conduct a public hearing on the Tax Reform Bills as part of efforts to finalize and pass them for the third reading.
The development was disclosed by Senator Abba Moro, Chairman of the Senate Ad-hoc Committee on Tax Reform, after a closed-door meeting with key government officials. Among those present were Attorney-General of the Federation Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), FIRS Chairman Zacch Adedeji, Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee Taiwo Oyedele, and RMAFC Chairman Dr. Mohammed Bello Shehu.
Speaking to journalists, Senator Moro highlighted the committee’s progress in addressing contentious issues within the tax bills. He reiterated the Senate’s commitment to creating tax laws that benefit all Nigerians.
“We have resolved to streamline the entire process to ensure Nigerians receive a law that reflects their needs and promotes national interest,” Moro stated.
FIRS Chairman Zacch Adedeji also expressed confidence in the progress, confirming that all outstanding issues had been resolved.
“Every grey area was discussed, clarified, and resolved. There is consensus that Nigeria needs these laws, and we are moving in the right direction,” Adedeji remarked.
The proposed Tax Reform Bills include:
– The Nigeria Tax Bill (NTB) 2024
– The Nigeria Tax Administration Bill (NTAB) 2024
– The Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill (NRSEB) 2024
– The Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Bill (JRBEB) 2024
These bills, which passed their second reading in the Senate on November 28, 2024, aim to streamline Nigeria’s tax administration, boost revenue generation, and enhance fiscal accountability.
Senator Moro assured Nigerians that the committee would soon complete its work, allowing the bills to proceed to the third reading and eventual passage into law.
