Senate Halts Tax Bill Pending AGF Meeting

The Senate has temporarily suspended discussions on the proposed Tax Reform Bill, pending a crucial meeting with the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) on Thursday, December 5.

Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, announced the decision during Wednesday’s plenary, emphasizing the need for further consultations to address concerns surrounding the bill.

A special committee, led by Senator Abba Moro, has been constituted to review contentious provisions. Other notable members include Senators Tahir Monguno, Aliero Adamu, Kalu Orji, and Dickson Seriake.

Additionally, the Senate leadership has scheduled a special meeting at the National Assembly, to be chaired by the Minority Leader. This meeting aims to harmonize divergent views, resolve disputes, and ensure the bill aligns with national economic priorities.

The suspension follows intense debates and growing concerns from lawmakers and stakeholders over specific sections of the bill.

The outcome of these engagements will play a pivotal role in shaping the final version of the legislation, balancing economic reforms with the interests of various stakeholders.
