Senate Backs State of Emergency Rule in Rivers

Abuja, Nigeria  —  The Nigerian Senate has approved President Bola Tinubu’s request for the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.

The decision was reached on Thursday, March 21, following a closed-door session held by lawmakers to deliberate on the issue.

The approval follows President Tinubu’s declaration of emergency rule in the state on March 18, suspending Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and members of the State House of Assembly for six months.

The move has sparked widespread debate, with opposition leaders condemning it as unconstitutional and calling for its immediate reversal.

While the Federal Government insists that the emergency measure is necessary to stabilize the state amid political tensions, critics argue that it sets a dangerous precedent.

As the situation unfolds, further details on the Senate’s deliberations and possible legal challenges are expected.
