The Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, has mandated the immediate closure of Saint Academy in Busa Buji, Jos, following a tragic building collapse that resulted in the deaths of 22 students and injuries to over 130 others.
Governor Mutfwang issued the order on Saturday morning during his visit to the site of the disaster. Accompanied by the school’s principal and staff, he inspected the premises and stressed the importance of safety.
“It is unfortunate what has happened, but it means that this school must be closed down immediately. We can’t take any further chances and need to send a clear message, particularly to owners of private schools,” Mutfwang stated.
The collapse occurred while students were in class on Friday. The bodies of the deceased have been moved to various morgues, while the injured are receiving critical medical care. Governor Mutfwang has instructed all major hospitals in Jos to prioritize the treatment of the victims, regardless of documentation or payment.
Additionally, the governor has ordered the arrest of artisanal miners operating near residential areas in the state.
President Bola Tinubu has described the loss of the 22 students as a significant tragedy for the nation, calling it a “devastating development—too excruciating to imagine.”
According to Radio Nigeria, the collapse happened during the students’ third-term examinations at Saint Academy Secondary School.
