Abuja, Nigeria: The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has raised the alarm over what it describes as a coordinated sabotage campaign aimed at derailing ongoing anti-corruption reforms within the organisation.
In a statement issued on Friday, the company’s new leadership, led by Group Chief Executive Officer Bayo Ojulari, disclosed that a network of internal and external actors was working to undermine efforts to transform the state-owned oil giant into a transparent and performance-driven entity.
Ojulari assumed office on April 2 following the removal of Mele Kyari by President Bola Tinubu as part of a broader overhaul of the petroleum sector.
According to the management, the group behind the sabotage is actively disseminating falsehoods and fabricating damaging narratives to discredit the leadership and obstruct reform initiatives aligned with the President’s mandate.
“The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has uncovered an emerging coordinated sabotage campaign being waged by a syndicate of known and faceless actors, both outside and within various levels of the organisation,” the statement read.
“These actors are deliberately spreading lies and misinformation to discredit NNPC Ltd.’s leadership and derail the company’s transformation into a corruption-free, performance-driven energy company.”
The statement alleged that tactics employed by the saboteurs include the strategic release of fabricated reports designed to distract the organisation’s leadership, mislead the public, and weaken internal morale.
“These calculated actions are being orchestrated by individuals who feel threatened by the principles of reform, transparency, and accountability—core values at the heart of our transformation,” the leadership said.
Despite anticipating an increase in defamatory campaigns in the coming weeks, the company assured stakeholders and the public that it remains committed to its reform agenda.
“We expect a surge of defamatory content in the days and weeks ahead. NNPC Ltd. remains undeterred. The transformation is underway, and no amount of sabotage will stop it,” the statement added.
The management urged staff, stakeholders, and Nigerians at large to remain focused and ignore distractions, reaffirming its commitment to overhauling Nigeria’s foremost energy institution.
Meanwhile, the company has yet to announce a replacement for its former Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, who resigned on Saturday.
