Russian Forces Capture Another Ukrainian Village

Russian forces announced on Tuesday the capture of another village in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region.

The Russian defense ministry stated that its troops had “liberated” the village of Pivdenne, located on the outskirts of Toretsk, a larger town towards which Russian forces have been advancing in recent months.

Prior to the full-scale Russian military offensive in 2022, Pivdenne had an estimated population of about 1,400, according to Ukrainian government data.

In recent weeks, Moscow has reported the capture of several villages in the Donetsk region, many of which are small, consisting of only a few streets.

Russia declared the annexation of the Donetsk region, along with three other regions in eastern and southern Ukraine, in 2022, despite not having complete control over these areas.

Russian forces have been closing in on Toretsk, a town that previously had a population of approximately 30,000 people, as part of their ongoing assault.

Pivdenne, which Russia refers to by its former name Leninske, is located about six kilometers (four miles) southeast of Toretsk.
