Nigerian rapper Michael Ugochukwu Stephens, popularly known as Ruggedman, has shared his reasons for withdrawing support from the controversial self-proclaimed activist, VeryDarkMan.
In the latest episode of the Echoo Room podcast, Ruggedman explained that he distanced himself from VeryDarkMan after the activist began intruding into people’s private lives. According to Ruggedman, VeryDarkMan’s approach to activism has become increasingly irrational.
“I initially supported VeryDarkMan when he was focused on issues like the NAFDAC number campaign,” Ruggedman stated. “But when he started getting personal, especially involving people’s private lives and targeting women, it became clear to me that he was losing focus.”
Ruggedman likened VeryDarkMan’s behavior to a police officer resorting to extreme measures prematurely, suggesting that as a professional, there are more appropriate ways to handle criticism. “Even if someone speaks against you, there’s a way to address it without resorting to personal attacks,” he added.
The rapper emphasized that while he admired VeryDarkMan’s initial efforts to expose those selling products without proper NAFDAC approval, he now finds the activist’s methods troubling. “What do you hear about him now? It’s all about personal disputes, like his issues with Iyabo Ojo and her daughter,” Ruggedman noted.
He suggested that VeryDarkMan’s current controversies, particularly comments about retired actresses using the late singer Mohbad’s situation for clout, have led to inevitable backlash. “You can’t make such remarks and not expect a response,” Ruggedman concluded, stressing that this kind of personal intrusion is why he no longer supports the activist.
