Ibadan, Nigeria — A symbolic shift in royal tradition has unfolded in Ibadanland as palace drummers move to the Bodija home of Oba Rashidi Ladoja, signaling his anticipated emergence as the next Olubadan.
The cultural development follows the recent passing of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, the Olubadan of Ibadanland. In keeping with historical custom, the movement of drummers—who once served the late monarch—to Ladoja’s residence reflects a traditional gesture of allegiance to the Otun Olubadan, who is next in the chieftaincy line.
This tradition was similarly observed during the succession of the late Oba Lekan Balogun, when drummers relocated from his Alarere palace to Oba Olakulehin’s Alalubosa home.
Oba Rashidi Ladoja, a respected elder statesman and former governor of Oyo State, now awaits formal endorsement by the Olubadan-in-Council. The council is expected to submit his nomination to the Oyo State Government for ratification and the ceremonial presentation of the staff of office.
Born on September 25, 1944, Ladoja was elected governor under the Peoples Democratic Party and served from May 29, 2003. As tradition dictates, the residence of the incoming Olubadan becomes the official palace upon coronation.
Ibadan’s chieftaincy succession rotates between the Otun and Balogun lines—two principal ruling families that guide the city’s revered monarchical system.
In a landmark event on August 12, 2024, the late Oba Olakulehin formally presented the ceremonial beaded crown to Ladoja—a crown the former governor had declined during the tenure of the late Governor Abiola Ajimobi.
The royal transition continues to unfold as Ibadan awaits the next chapter in its storied traditional leadership.
