Rome Hospital Admits Pope Francis for Respiratory Infection

Rome, Nigeria  —  Pope Francis is receiving treatment for a respiratory infection at Gemelli Hospital in Rome, the Vatican announced on Monday

The 88-year-old pontiff was admitted to the hospital on Friday for bronchitis treatment and tests, which revealed a polymicrobial infection affecting his respiratory tract. According to Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni, the pope’s medication has been modified to address the infection, and he will remain hospitalized for as long as necessary. Despite his illness, Bruni reported that the pope remains in good spirits.

The Vatican statement described the pope’s condition as a “complex clinical picture” requiring appropriate hospitalization. As a result, the pope’s weekly general audience, scheduled for Wednesday, has been canceled.

This is not the pope’s first health challenge; he has faced several health issues in recent years, including a history of respiratory problems.
