Marseille has named Roberto De Zerbi as their new manager.
De Zerbi left Brighton at the end of last season after a two-year stint in the Premier League. The Italian coach has agreed to a three-year contract with Marseille, taking over from Jean-Louis Gasset, who retired at the conclusion of the last campaign.
“I had a very strong desire to join the club,” De Zerbi stated, expressing his ambition to “help the club regain the position that Marseille deserves.”
Owner Frank McCourt commented, “He shares our vision for the future of the club.”
De Zerbi, who previously coached Shakhtar Donetsk, joined Brighton in September 2022 on a four-year deal. In his debut season, he led Brighton to a historic sixth-place finish, securing European qualification for the first time in the club’s history.
Last season, Brighton finished 11th in the league and reached the last 16 of the Europa League before it was “mutually agreed” that De Zerbi would step down.
Jean-Louis Gasset, 70, who previously managed Montpellier and Bordeaux, took over on an interim basis in February after Gennaro Gattuso’s departure and guided Marseille to an eighth-place finish in Ligue 1, their lowest since 2016.
