Rivers State to investigate the reported sale of vaccines threatens punishment.

The Rivers State Government has initiated an investigation in response to complaints lodged by several nursing mothers who alleged that personnel within health centers were involved in the sale of immunization vaccines.

The government has made it clear that any employees found engaging in the sale of vaccines will be subjected to disciplinary measures. Dr. Kinikanwo Green, the Executive Director of the Rivers State Primary Healthcare Management Board, made this announcement during an unannounced visit to the Obio Cottage and Rumuokwurishi Health Centers located in the Obio/Akpotha Local Government Area of the state.

This development comes in the wake of accusations from nursing mothers who claimed that personnel at the Obio Cottage Hospital and Rumuokrushi Health Centre, both situated in the Obio/Ajpir Local Government of the State, were selling vaccines.

A mother who preferred to remain anonymous recounted her experience, stating that during her initial visit, she was not required to make any payment. However, on a subsequent occasion, she was asked to pay N9,000 for a vaccine, with the amount allegedly rising to N10,000 during her most recent visit. Frustrated by the situation, she expressed her inability to pay and decided to leave.

In response to these concerns, Dr. Kinikanwo Green addressed the nursing mothers at the Obio Cottage Hospital, emphasizing that the state government will not tolerate any actions that could compromise the health of children or mothers. He assured the public that the vaccines are meant to be free and emphasized that the government, led by Governor Siminilayi Fubara, has taken measures to ensure their availability.

Dr. Green further indicated that a disciplinary committee has been established to investigate the matter, and appropriate actions will be taken against any staff found culpable. He reasserted the commitment of the government to eradicating any unethical practices that jeopardize the well-being of mothers and children.

“We are not going to accept any sharp practices that are inimical to the health of our mothers and the health of our children,” Dr. Green concluded.
