Rivers Crisis: Wike Willing to Engage in Peace Talks

RiversLere Olayinka, the Senior Special Assistant to the FCT Minister on Public Communication and Social Media, has confirmed that Nyesom Wike is open to peace discussions to resolve the ongoing political conflict in Rivers State.

According to a report, Wike is not opposed to mediation but maintains that Governor Siminalayi Fubara should have promptly enforced the Supreme Court’s ruling after it was issued.

The rift between Wike and Fubara, whom Wike played a key role in bringing to power two years ago, has escalated into a full-blown crisis. Some analysts blame Wike for the instability, while others argue that Fubara’s actions have also contributed to the tensions.

Olayinka stressed that it is the responsibility of the National Assembly to take the lead in mediating state conflicts when necessary. He also acknowledged that the Presidency has the authority to step in if it deems it appropriate. While some critics accuse Wike of hindering reconciliation efforts, Olayinka dismissed these claims, reiterating that Wike is open to discussions aimed at restoring stability in the state.

He also pointed out that previous attempts by President Bola Tinubu to mediate were met with opposition from those who felt he lacked the authority to intervene. However, if the necessary authorities choose to facilitate negotiations, Wike is willing to participate.

“The minister is not against sitting down for discussions. If the National Assembly or the Presidency wants to mediate, there is no objection,” Olayinka affirmed.
