Rivers Assembly Approves Procurement Amendment Law, Clashes with Governor Fubara

The deadlock between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Rivers State House of Assembly persists as the Assembly intensifies its scrutiny of the state’s Public Procurement Law, culminating in a veto standoff.

During Monday’s plenary session, Speaker Martin Amaewhule leveled accusations of fiscal mismanagement and unauthorized spending against the governor, sparking heated debate over the state’s financial management under his leadership.

Of particular concern was the delay in salary disbursement to employees in Emohua Local Government for the month of March, prompting Deputy Speaker Dumle Maol to rally his colleagues in overriding the governor’s veto on the state public procurement amendment bill.

The Assembly’s resolute stance was further underscored by the passage of the second reading of the Rivers State Public Procurement Amendment Bill 2024, symbolized by the authoritative strike of the Speaker’s gavel.

This latest development exacerbates the ongoing tensions between Governor Fubara and the House of Assembly, marking the sixth instance where the Assembly has flexed its legislative muscle to counter the governor’s decisions.

The clash echoes a similar confrontation in April, when the Rivers State House of Assembly overturned Governor Fubara’s veto and successfully passed an amendment to the Rivers State Local Government Law, further deepening the political rift between the executive and legislative arms of the state government.
