Respect court ruling on LGA autonomy— Ajaero warns governors

NigeriaThe President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, has cautioned state governments against frustrating the implementation of the Supreme Court judgment granting financial autonomy to local governments

The judgment, delivered on July 11, 2024, directed local governments to open accounts with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to receive their allocations directly, bypassing state-controlled joints account

Ajaero’s warning came during the inauguration of the 8th National Administrative Council meeting of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) in Abuja. He assured that the NLC would fully support NULGE in achieving total autonomy at all costs. The Supreme Court ruling has significant implications for grassroots development and governance in Nigeria, aiming to enhance service delivery, promote accountability, and foster democratic governance at the local level.
