Researchers Advocate Inter-Ethnic Marriages to Address Farmer-Herder Conflicts

Inter-ethnic marriages, among other strategies, have been recommended as a solution to the ongoing farmer-herder conflicts and related security issues in Nigeria.

This recommendation emerged from a presentation by a team of empirical researchers at the Department of Sociology, University of Ilorin.

The study, titled “Interrogating Inter-group Relations and Peace Building among Farmers and Pastoralists in Rural Grazing Areas of Nigeria,” underscored the importance of empirical research for government-led conflict resolution initiatives.

The principal investigator, Professor Yinusa Mohammed from the Department of Sociology, University of Ilorin, highlighted that the research aims to promote sustainable peace, specifically targeting the resolution of farmer-herder disputes.

Professor Mohammed pointed out that communities with higher instances of intercultural marriages experience relative peace and urged the government to educate rural populations on the benefits of such practices.

Professor Johnson Ayodele of Littoral University, Port Novo, Republic of Benin, emphasized the urgent need for the government to implement measures to improve living conditions for Nigerians, particularly the youth. He noted that youth unrest is becoming more critical than the farmer-herder clashes.

Dr. Abdullateef Aji, Acting Head of the Sociology Department at the University of Ilorin, called on journalists to focus more on investigative reporting rather than interpretative pieces that can lead to ethical and religious profiling.

Mr. Olawale Gbadeyan, a lecturer from the Department of Peace and Conflict Studies at the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, urged the government to pass legislation that promotes farming and pastoralism as integrated agroeconomic activities.

The researchers also recommended reintroducing nomadic education to highlight the importance of peace and the value of human life.
