The House of Representatives has introduced bills proposing a single six-year term for the President, state governors, and local government chairpersons.
The bills, co-sponsored by over thirty members identified as Reformed Minded Lawmakers, also advocate for holding all elections, including those in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), on the same day.
During a briefing at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, the leader of the Reformed Minded Lawmakers, Mr. Ikenga Ugochinyere, highlighted that the bills propose rotating the presidency among the country’s six geopolitical zones.
Mr. Ugochinyere further explained that the bills include provisions for two Vice Presidents: one for succession if the President dies, and one for administration.
Additionally, the proposed legislation mandates that pre-election court matters be resolved 30 days before the election, and that election disputes be concluded before the winners are sworn in.
The bills also recommend a seven-year prison term for any electoral officer who deliberately announces results contrary to the actual vote count.
The Reformed Minded Lawmakers urged Nigerians to support these bills to achieve the good governance they have long desired.
