Reps Invite Edun, Cardoso Over Audit, FRA Breach Claims

Abuja, NigeriaThe House of Representatives has summoned Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, and Central Bank Governor, Dr. Olayemi Cardoso, over alleged financial infractions highlighted in the 2021 Auditor General’s report and violations of the Fiscal Responsibility Act (FRA) 2007.

This development was disclosed in a statement released by the House joint committee on Public Accounts and Public Assets, signed by Chairmen Hon. Bamidele Salam and Hon. Ademorin Kuye, respectively.

The joint committee requested both officials to appear before it on Monday to address concerns over the non-remittance or under-remittance of operating surpluses to the Federation Account by key government agencies, including the CBN.

According to reports from the Fiscal Responsibility Commission and the Auditor General’s office, numerous federal Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) have, over the last six years, failed to meet financial obligations as stipulated by law—an issue said to have adversely affected federal liquidity and budget implementation.

Chairman Salam noted that the committee had granted both the Finance Ministry and CBN ample time for reconciliation of accounts and submission of their positions, making the upcoming hearing crucial to resolving outstanding liabilities.

In addition, the committee is reviewing audit findings that expose long-abandoned public projects—despite full payments—across locations such as Dutse and Abeokuta, with some dating back as far as 2011.

The committee reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring accountability in the management of public funds and assets, signaling a push for transparency and stricter adherence to financial regulations.
