The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) labor unions have suspended their planned strike, which was set to commence on Monday, May 20.
This decision followed an agreement and resolution reached during a special session convened by the House Committee on Aviation and Technology.
Committee Chairman Mr. Abiodun Akinlade Ishaq announced the resolution after a nearly nine-hour interactive session with NiMet management and its labor unions. He assured that the issues raised by the unions would be resolved within four weeks and their outstanding areas would be addressed.
The communique stated that the House Committee on Aviation Technology will establish a sub-committee, chaired by the deputy chairman of the House Committee on Technology, to liaise with the Ministry of Finance, Budget Office, IPPIS, and other relevant agencies to ensure prompt payment of arrears.
Mr. Ishaq emphasized that the parliament has a responsibility to intervene in the impending strike to provide solutions and maintain peace in the country.
The meeting was prompted by media reports about the union’s planned strike over unresolved issues concerning NiMet staff welfare.
Secretary General of the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees, Mr. Sikiru Waheed, speaking on behalf of other unions such as ANAP, NUATE, and SSASGOG, thanked the committee for addressing their concerns. He noted that the unions do not wish to disrupt the economy if their grievances are properly addressed.
