Abuja, Nigeria — The House of Representatives has called for an independent investigation into the errors that marred the conduct of the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), expressing deep regret over the challenges faced by affected candidates.
The demand was made by Mr. Oboku Oforji, Chairman of the House Committee on Basic Education and Examination Bodies, during a press briefing held Tuesday in Abuja.
Addressing journalists, Mr. Oforji extended the National Assembly’s apology to Nigerians, particularly parents and candidates who were forced to retake the UTME due to administrative lapses.
“The Committee overseeing examination bodies such as JAMB expresses heartfelt sympathy to the candidates impacted by these unfortunate errors,” Oforji stated. “We sincerely apologise on behalf of the examination body and extend this apology to all Nigerians.”
The Committee commended Professor Ishaq Oloyede, Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), for owning up to the errors and issuing a public apology—a gesture described as both courageous and responsible.
Mr. Oforji further assured that the House would initiate a comprehensive investigation to uncover the root causes of the errors and prevent recurrence. He stressed the importance of reform-oriented legislation aimed at strengthening institutional capacity within the education sector.
“Our Committee is determined to not only provide actionable recommendations but also enhance our legislative oversight to ensure greater transparency and accountability within Nigeria’s educational framework,” he affirmed.
The statement concluded with a firm commitment by the House to uphold the integrity of the country’s examination systems and safeguard the academic future of its youth.
