Reps Demand Accountability from WAEC over Exam Irregularities

Abuja, NigeriaThe House of Representatives has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) over mounting concerns regarding the conduct of the ongoing Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE).

The directive was made by Hon. Oboku Oforji, Chairman of the House Committee on Basic Education and Examination Bodies, following WAEC’s failure to appear at a scheduled investigative session on Thursday.

Addressing the press, Hon. Oforji expressed strong dissatisfaction with WAEC’s absence, noting that the session was convened to clarify reports of widespread exam irregularities, including students allegedly writing exams late into the night.

“We summoned WAEC to provide explanations for the disturbing developments in this year’s SSCE. Their absence today is unacceptable,” Oforji said.

He further stated that WAEC had cited its ongoing exam engagements as the reason for not appearing, a justification the committee found inadequate given the gravity of the allegations.

“These irregularities are happening under their supervision,” he remarked. “WAEC owes the public a duty of transparency and accountability.”

Emphasizing the urgency of the situation, Oforji called for immediate answers, stressing that the House’s objective is not punitive but corrective.

“We are not here to witch-hunt WAEC,” he noted. “Our priority is to protect Nigerian students and restore public confidence in our examination systems.”

He added that failure to comply with the directive by Friday, May 30, 2025, would compel the House to invoke its constitutional powers to ensure WAEC’s appearance.

The statement concluded with a firm commitment by the House Committee to uphold educational integrity and prevent future disruptions in national examinations.
